Skeleton Gorge

(Immersive)

The skeleton gorge route offers a completely different perspective on the mountain. A largely shaded hike, it weaves its way along a waterway through indigineous forest, a vast contrast to the 'dry' routes on the other side of the mountain. Spectacularly, the hike ends at a mountaintop 'beach' of white sand where of course it is possible to take a refreshing dip. Returning down the mountain there is the option of ending in the famous Kirstenbosch, for those wanting to explore the beautiful botanical gardens.

Possible extensions; Hike through Aqueduct

Time; 6hrs

Elevation; 900m

Good for; Indigenous forest, rock formations, easy scrambling

Kasteelspoort

(Immersive)

The Kasteelspoort trail is on the Camps Bay (Atlantic Ocean) side of Table Mountain. It offers an immersive feeling of the mountain, with beautiful indigenous feinbos (fine bush), bird life and Protea flowers. The path winds up across a buttress and along a ravine of the famous 12 Apostles. It is best suited to someone who wants to experience the beauty and tranquillity of Table Mountain through a relatively ‘easier’ ascent. That being said, Table Mountain is steep and a good level of fitness is required for any summit. The route offers views of the surrounding mountains, Lions Head, Atlantic Ocean and the beaches of Cape Town as well as the suburb of Camps Bay.

Possible extensions; Diagonal Path

Time; 3.5hrs

Elevation; 900m

Good for; Immersive experience, flora, rock formations, easy scrambling.

Diagonal

(Panoramic)

The diagonal route offers the immersive experience of kasteelspoort winding through beautiful feinbos and rock formations. The route proceeds as the name suggests diagonally across the buttresses and ravines of the mountain. Uniquely the path also often faces out to sea, giving one the feeling that they are walking suspended above the ocean with breathtaking views of the twelve apostles. There is the added benefit of some fun rock scrambling at the end of the route.

Possible extensions; Visiting the mountaintop dams

Time; 4hrs

Elevation; 900m

Good for; Immersive experience, flora, rock formations, views

Lions Head

(Panoromic)

The Lion's Head trail spirals up the prominent, lower peak of the Table Mountain range. The hike offers the best panoramic views of Cape Town, including the city and harbour, Atlantic Ocean and Robben Island and Table Mountain herself. The path is relatively flat and easy for the first half of the hike before progressing into a rocky section of relatively easy scrambling. Steep sections are assisted with ladders and chains. It’s a longtime local favourite and if you are less fit, or want a more leisurely hike, Lions Head offers the best bang for your buck in terms of stunning vistas and a summit experience all in a relatively short time span.

Possible extension; Secret Cave (1hr)

Time; 3hrs

Elevation; 650m

Good for; Panoramic views, leisurely hiking

India Venster
(Advent
ure)

India Venster offers an adventurous and direct ascent up the front table of the mountain. It is best suited for those with good fitness, reasonable athletic ability (there are some technical scrambling sections) and a head for heights. The hike offers breathtaking views of the city and harbour and finds an unlikely break in the mountain cliffs. It includes a beautiful hike along a ledge onto which opens up stunning views of the Atlantic seaboard. It ends at the cable way, where guests can enjoy 360 degree summit views and a café/ restaurant before coming down on the cable car.

Possible extension; Hike to the highest point on Table Mountain, Maclears Beacon (1hr30)

Time; 3.5hrs

Elevation; 1050m

Good for; A true adventure, scrambling experience, views of city and Table Bay.
